Hit BBC3 sitcom Gavin and Stacey has yet another award to brag about after picking up the 2008 South Bank Show Award for TV comedy. The award, presented by Jack Dee, was collected by writers and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones.

The new comedy, which also won a Broadcast Award last week, was named ‘Best New Sitcom 2007′ in our own British Sitcom Awards, and picked up three British Comedy Awards the previous month, was up against Hot Fuzz and Alan Carr for this South Bank award.

The Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Dorchester Hotel, will be broadcast on ITV1 on Sunday, February 3rd.

Afterwards Ruth Jones admitted “I totally didn’t think we had won it” whilst James Corden said: “this morning when I woke up I thought we might win it, but when Jack Dee started talking I thought Alan Carr had won”.

The comedy will be back on BBC Three shortly for a second series. The plot sees married life begin in earnest at the Shipman family home in Essex for newlyweds Gavin and Stacey. But, as the reality of living so far away sinks in, Stacey starts missing her home in Barry Island along with her mum and her Uncle Bryn. Meanwhile, Gavin and Stacey’s best friends, Smithy and Nessa, are coming to terms with their own stark reality: they’re not even friends and yet they’re having a baby together.
