Gavin and Stacey go abroad
Thursday, March 6th, 2008According to British Sitcom Guide
The hit BBC Three sitcom Gavin and Stacey has become the most recent British sitcom to be given the go ahead to be adapted for an American audience.

The series will be remade by NBC, the same channel behind the American version of The Office. Steve Coogan, the head of Baby Cow Productions which makes Gavin and Stacey, will oversee the production of the remake, alongside James Corden and Ruth Jones, the show’s creators (pictured).
Corden told The Times: “It’s really exciting. The idea is that Gavin will come from New Jersey, which has the same relation to New York as Essex does to London. Stacey will be from South Carolina. They meet in Times Square. I hope they keep the British names but they may have to change them.”
The second series of the British version is due to start on BBC Three on Sunday 16th March with a double-bill. Corden said that he expects the British version to finish with a Christmas special, whereas the American version will go on, similar to the current adaptation of The Office. The BBC has also asked Corden and Jones to make their own sketch show, as well as writing film scripts.

Triumphant night for ‘Gavin and Stacey’ at comedy awards
Thursday, December 6th, 2007
The simple premise of boy meets girl resulted in three prestigious British Comedy Awards for BBC3 last night.

Gavin and Stacey tells the story of a regular guy from Essex and regular girl from Barry Island, South Wales and was written by the actors Ruth Jones and James Corden after they had met on the set of ITV1′s Fat Friends. During filming, Corden told Jones about an idea for a comedy that he and his girlfriend had come up with and the pair decided to write the sitcom together.

They were so dedicated to the project that Jones even flew to New York, where Corden was appearing in the Broadway production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys so they could continue writing. Last night, their effort paid off when Gavin and Stacey was crowned best new comedy at the awards in London, beating Jack Dee’s BBC4 comedy Lead Balloon and BBC1 sitcom Not Going Out.
Jones and Corden, who play the couple’s best friends Nessa and Smith, were also named best female and male newcomer.
The BBC3 series, which also stars Alison Steadman and Rob Brydon, is produced by Baby Cow, the production company set up by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal, which was behind Saxondale and Nighty Night.
