Gavin & Stacey is up for three more TV awards, just days after its British Comedy Award success.
The BBC Three sitcom has been shortlisted in three categories of the industry’s Broadcast Awards: best comedy, best multichannel programme and best new programme.

The winners will be announced in London on January 23.

The simple premise of boy meets girl resulted in three prestigious British Comedy Awards for BBC3 last night.

Gavin and Stacey tells the story of a regular guy from Essex and regular girl from Barry Island, South Wales and was written by the actors Ruth Jones and James Corden after they had met on the set of ITV1′s Fat Friends. During filming, Corden told Jones about an idea for a comedy that he and his girlfriend had come up with and the pair decided to write the sitcom together.

They were so dedicated to the project that Jones even flew to New York, where Corden was appearing in the Broadway production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys so they could continue writing. Last night, their effort paid off when Gavin and Stacey was crowned best new comedy at the awards in London, beating Jack Dee’s BBC4 comedy Lead Balloon and BBC1 sitcom Not Going Out.
Jones and Corden, who play the couple’s best friends Nessa and Smith, were also named best female and male newcomer.
The BBC3 series, which also stars Alison Steadman and Rob Brydon, is produced by Baby Cow, the production company set up by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal, which was behind Saxondale and Nighty Night.
Gavin and Stacey has won record nominations for this week’s Comedy Awards. Vanessa Thorpe reports on the genesis of a modern classic
‘Seven nominations does seem quite a lot,’ admits Ruth Jones, looking ahead to Wednesday evening. ‘It should be a great night anyway. I am going to wear a midnight blue dress that has been made for me. It is a godsend to have things made for you when you have a larger frame.’
Jones will be attending this year’s British Comedy Awards as possibly the most celebrated star of the occasion. Gavin and Stacey, the BBC sitcom that she co-writes with her friend James Corden and in which they both appear, is listed for an impressive seven awards. [Read the rest of this entry...]

“I’m in one of the new Miss Marple films for ITV1, the Beeb’s update of literary romp Fanny Hill and in the second series of Gavin and Stacey, written by my good friend Ruth Jones, who’s Welsh. That’s going onto BBC Two, which is great. It’s nice to play that part, there’s no angst, it’s uplifting. I love the way my character loves Camilla Parker Bowles!”
So that’s a treat to look forward to in 2008!
